A few leaves trimmed closely at top, OTHERWISE A FINE COPY. ARMORIAL BOOKPLATE of GEN. WM. THORNTON.

The Bibl. Angl. Poet. (1815) quoted a copy with fac-simile portrait at ten guineas.

12mo, Black Letter, elegantly bound in full light brown russia, richly tooled gilt back, paneled sides, tastefully ornamented, inside morocco borders, gilt edges, by FRANCIS BEDFORD. A. W. GRISWOLD'S COPY, with his gilt crest on front cover. Title within an engraved border, a very small piece supplied, as also one letter. In a few instances, the front edges have been trimmed closely, but IN ALL OTHER RESPECTS this is AN EXCEPTIONALLY LARGE AND FINE COPY. FINE IMPRESSIONS OF THE SPIRITED WOODCUTS.

EXCESSIVELY RARE. THIS VOLUME POSSESSES EXTRAORDINARY INTEREST because of its containing THE VERY EARLIEST PUBLISHED WRITINGS of EDMUND SPENSER, HE BEING BUT SIXTEEN YEARS OF AGE AT THIS TIME. The SONNETS translated from PETRARCH, and the Visions of BELLAY, are by SPENSER, and were also published in his “Complaints," 1591.
