shaped receptacle. On border, one line of late writing. Good work. (Pl. VIII.) O Wêsh! O Ashêri! The qêreñ-akarêrê Malêwitar begotten of Anashayi born of Shayêkeli. (Formulae A B.) Found with a sculptured shrine-jamb outside the ruined grave 88 (with vaulted substructure in a pit) in the south-east part of the cemetery. The two slabs lay eastward of the grave and almost opposite to it, and may therefore have belonged to the shrine of a vanished mastaba over the grave. The grave was of the late period. (Brit. Mus.) This fine altar is of special interest as being the complement of a funerary stele in the British Museum which was obtained at Faras by Rhind towards the middle of the last century (). On this : Malêwitar born of Shayekeli: begotten of Anashayi (2) (dwelling) in Shaye (3) is entitled «qêreñ-akarêrê: qêreň of Nakazeyê wemanis-akarêré : chief envoy of (i. e. to?) Rome: envoy of Makheyê nate of the envoy -law (Published BUDGE, Sudan, II, 444, and, with commentary (q. v.) and partial translation, GRIFFITH, Meroitic Inscriptions, II, pl. XLII, p. 54 (n° 129). (2) Anashayi, which I formerly took to be a title on account of the location following it, is doubtless a personal name, and probably to be connected with the woman's name Nashaye occuring at Karanôg and Shablul. (3) The island of Sai. qerete of Makheyê yazi ashachayaki (?) yeteke: shashi-mete-maleyês : envoy in Khalite: [chala]ben in Khalite: : shaqake: kin of the charapachan in Pakharas Atapete kin of the shi[r]emar[e]ke? (V)-akarêré Shibawiye: kin of ateqis in Shazês: kin of belilêkes in Pezeme (2): kin of tarate-keses in Taketêre kin of maleyêses in Atiye". 3. Round-topped stela, 48 cm. x 34 cm., engraved below the curve with ten lines of late writing, the first seven between rules. O Wêsh! O Ashêri! Marazewitar: born of Atapi(1) begotten of the maraperi Yereqaye: masqérés in Pakharas: masqérés in Tanar: great shasher katatare: zala-tabaqé katatare: mañabache in Aleket (or Alapet): zekate of the charapach. (Formula A.) Katalare occurs similarly after titles «great wêmanis « great pêzamas" (or pézakhas, cf. « pazakhés », »great pazakheses, Inscr., 94/7,21) in Inser., 44, 58b, 58c. For tabaqé, see no 35. Hrphl seems here and elsewhere to be the form of hrphñ used in construction. Found with the next. (Brit. Mus.) (1) The traces of writing seem to admit of this restoration. The simple title is seen in 18, and the compound shiremarêke-akaréré in Sh. 4, applied to a person of great distinction who was renvoy of the king". (2) Amara. 4. Stela with rectangular projection at the top, h. 43 cm. w. 31 cm., inscribed with fifteen horizontal lines between rules, incisions coloured red. : Zêkhatelitê kin of maleyêses in Atiye kin of the taratekes in Tanate Atiyachar: kin of the taratekes in Taketêre Teñakitanize born of Abêtatelitê : malê-maras in Atiye : begotten of the shashimete Ametê(l) : malé. Possibly in Tanate is intended to be corrected to «in Tanar (cf. Faras Ostr.) by the insertion of a small and indistinct r at the end of the line; but if so the faulty te was allowed to remain at the beginning of the next line. Teñakitanize is closely like Atngytnrye in demotic at Philae, the name of a strategos and agent of Isis, cf. Journal, III, p. 114 (bb). Nos 3 and 4 with two uninscribed stelae had been reused for the repair (?) of the small late rectangular grave 150, abut twenty metres west of the last mentioned. (Brit. Mus.) 5. Rude altar approximately square, but corners much rounded, 25 cm.×33 cm., including spout, surface decaying, inscribed with one line of late writing round the edge; the field is now plain but not improbably has been filled with a painted representation of offerings. |
