So days went on a week had passed Since the great world was heard from last. The Almanac we studied o'er,

Read and reread our little store

Of books and pamphlets, scarce a score;

[graphic][ocr errors][merged small][merged small]

Welcome to us its week-old news,
Its corner for the rustic Muse,
Its monthly gauge of snow and rain,
Its record, mingling in a breath
The wedding bell and dirge of death.
We felt the stir of hall and street,
The pulse of life that round us beat;
The chill embargo of the snow
Was melted in the genial glow;
Wide swung again our ice-locked door,
And all the world was ours once more!

Abridged.

COLUMBIA, THE GEM OF THE OCEAN

O, COLUMBIA, the gem of the ocean,
The home of the brave and the free,
The shrine of each patriot's devotion,
A world offers homage to thee;
Thy mandates make heroes assemble,
When Liberty's form stands in view;
Thy banners make tyranny tremble,
When borne by the red, white, and blue,
When borne by the red, white, and blue,
When borne by the red, white, and blue,
Thy banners make tyranny tremble,
When borne by the red, white, and blue.

When war winged its wide desolation,
And threatened the land to deform,
The ark, then, of freedom's foundation,
Columbia rode safe through the storm:
With the garlands of vic'try around her,
When so proudly she bore her brave crew,
With her flag proudly floating before her,
The boast of the red, white, and blue,
The boast of the red, white, and blue,
The boast of the red, white, and blue,
With her flag proudly floating before her,
The boast of the red, white, and blue.

The star-spangled banner bring hither,
O'er Columbia's true sons let it wave;

May the wreaths they have won never wither,
Nor its stars cease to shine on the brave.
May the service united ne'er sever,

But hold to their colors so true;
The army and navy forever,

Three cheers for the red, white, and blue,
Three cheers for the red, white, and blue,
Three cheers for the red, white, and blue,
The army and navy forever,

Three cheers for the red, white, and blue.

THE STAR-SPANGLED BANNER

BY FRANCIS SCOTT KEY

Он, say, can you see, by the dawn's early light,

What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming? Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous

fight,

O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming;

And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there :
Oh, say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

On that shore, dimly seen through the mists of the deep, Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes, What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep, As it fitfully blows, now conceals, now discloses ?

Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam,
In full glory reflected now shines on the stream:
'Tis the star-spangled banner; oh, long may it wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

Oh, thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand

Between their loved homes and the war's desolation! Blest with victory and peace, may the heaven-rescued land

Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.

Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: "In God is our trust!"
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.
