One of the richest, most instructive, and most accurate catalogues existing, and quite indispensable, not only to the bibliographer, but also to the scholar. The duke de Vallière (his librarian was the well known abbé Rive, his adviser the well informed bibliographer Mercier de S. Léger) had conceived the notion of a universal library, and collected not only with respect to scientific works, but also from a feeling of bibliomania. Whilst he was ever on the watch to procure at an uncalculated expense, MSS., Incunabula, large paper copies, and rarities of all kinds, and had particular regard to distinguished copies, he at the same time sought to obtain what was best and most interesting in all scientific departments, and collected with a particular love for the department of poetry, the drama, and romances, in which he really possessed a royal treasure. procured entire the libraries of Guyon de Sardière, Bonnemet (1772 for 18,000 livr.), Jackson, and Urfé (only the MSS. and books on vellum from this last); at Gaignat's sale alone he purchased the principal treasures for from 80,600 livr. to 90,000 livr., and his expenditure at Askew's sale amounted to from 12,000 to 15,000 livr. Thus originated this library, equally distinguished for splendour, selection, and appropriate completeness, which at his death comprised 32,205 works, not reckoning volumes. He He had formed a separate catalogue of the most costly articles, and of the greatest rarities the list of which is contained in 6 K the first 3 vols. of the Catalogue. It consisted of 5668 works, and produced at the sale the sum of 464,677 livr. 8 sous. The chief purchasers were the Imperial library at Vienna, and count Rewiczky. The catalogue of this cabinet was made by Debure, but the description of the MSS. was by Vanpraet, the then royal librarian. The latter is masterly, and an authority for the history of the older French literature, which cannot be sufficiently regarded. Debure also has employed commendable industry in the description of the most particular rarities among the printed books, for instance the Incunabula, and an excellent index increases the value of this first division of the catalogue. Debure has frequently however not given the title itself with the accuracy and completeness which a bibliographer would desire. The other division of the library consisted of that proper scientific portion which usually occurs (although even in it rarities of a higher order are to be met with), and contained 26,537 works. The catalogue of this part has therefore a more scientific interest than the first division, and is at the same time executed with much greater and almost superfluous bibliographical accuracy, but is unfortunately very inconveniently arranged, and is without an index. This catalogue maintains a particular value on account of the works which it contains having remained together; for this second part of the library was bought entire by the marquis de Paulmy (see MÉLANGES, above), and was again purchased in 1785, with the rest of his entire library, by the present king of France (then count d'Artois), and now forms the most considerable part of what is called the Bibl. de l'Arsenal at Paris, but which during the republic was styled the Bibl. du Panthéon. There are copies of all the 9 vols. of this catalogue on large paper, but only 12 copies on large paper d'Annonay. In Ségur's Mémoires, I. 147. Vallière is moreover depicted as a mere courtier and his authorship of the Bibliothèque du théâtre franç. (see BIBLIOTHÈQUE, above, No. 2395) is doubted. 23367 VALLISNIERI, Ant. Opere fisico-mediche. The first and scarce edition of a work both interesting for the history of the art of war in the middle ages and affording by the representations of its plates an instructive insight into it. It is at the same time remarkable as being the first Veronese typographical production, and costly on account of the excellence of the 82 woodcuts contained in it, which were probably done after designs by Matteo Pasti, and are the first occurring in a dated Italian typographical production. 259 leaves in all (not reckoning the blank leaves), with 37 lines in a full page, without signatures, catchwords, and numbering of the leaves. The first 4 leaves contain a list of chapters, and leaf 5a line 1 is, REDO EQUIDEM NEC SUM. Two copies of this edition on vellum are known of (one of them 291. 18s. 4d. at Sykes's sale). A complete copy (to which 3 plates belong, viz. a title-plate, the author's portrait, and a genealogical tree of the Medici family) is thus recognised; that in p. 639 and 640 the account of the crime of Pt. L. Farnese against the bishop of Fano is not omitted, that then all the pages of sheet Lill contain 51 lines instead of 50, and that a small printer's mark is to be found at the end of p. 640. In the mutilated copies the history ends in p. 639 with a large printer's mark underneath. Some originally mutilated copies have been completed by a later reprint of this last leaf; but this reprint may easily be recognised by the difference of type, and from the circumstance of there being no printer's mark in p. 640. A contemporaneous notice in J. Gli. Krausii nov. literar., not unworthy of credit, states that the duke of Parma bought 400 copies of the impression to destroy the recollection of that crime. The edition, Leida, Pt. van der Aa, without date (1723). fol. (also appended to the Thesaur. antiqq. et hist. ital. T. 8.
