Of the Translations, some are of poems already rendered into English, and well known. But my object has been to gather into one volume such specimens of the Poetry of the North and South, translated by myself, as might show those differences which spring from diversity of race, temperament, and climate, and yet exhibit that unfailing bond of brotherhood, whereby the Poet-heart every where recognizes truth, and love, and the beautiful, and a higher life than ours is here; in whatever voice such feelings may be expressed. |
