Three volumes on the Birds of the same country were printed in 1805. The following dedicatory letter from the author to his brother is interesting. "Dear Nicholas,-Soon after our birth we were separated by our parents, and have never met in the whole course of our lives, except once by chance in Barcelona, when we were together for the short space of two days only. While you was living in the great world, and by your elevated employments, works, talents, and virtues, have gained an honourable name among nations, I have been without any ostensible employment, and without opportunities of making myself known to you or any one else, have passed the best 20 years of my life in the remotest corner of the earth, forgotten even by my friends, without books or rational society, travelling through deserts and immense and frightful forests, birds and beasts my only companions. Of these I have written the history which I now dedicate to you, and send you that you may know me by it, and become acquainted with my labours. It is necessary to inform you, however, that although this is the same work which I sent you some years ago, and which has just been published in Paris*, it has been augmented, rectified, and much improved, as you will find on examination." lain to the Prince, and Vicar of Preston.

Cadell,

This volume comes down to the end of the 15th century, and is all that was
published of the work, which the author contemplated to have completed
in six or seven volumes. The Edinburgh Review is rather severe in its cri-
ticisms, but allows the author credit for his bibliographical researches. The
appendix contains, among other things, Galvano's discoveries of the world,
and Locke's history of navigation, and explanatory catalogue of voyages
from Churchill's collection.
