Her mother studied medicine at the Women's Medical College in Philadelphia, established a medical practice in Davenport, Iowa, and was prominent in organizing women to relieve suffering during the Civil War. The daughter left for China as a missionary of the Methodist Episcopal Church in October, 1871 and spent about 30 years in China. Includes many excerpts from her letters as well as her own account of the siege of the foreign legations in Peking during the Boxer Rebellion. |
