Winchell (A.) - Preadamites; or, a Demonstration of the Existence of Men before Adam; with a Study of their Condition, Antiquity, Racial Affinities and Progressive Dispersion over the Earth. 8vo. cloth, pp. xxvi. and 500. With Charts and Illustrations. Chicago. 18s. A scholarly treatise written in a popular way, and of interest, not merely to ethnologists and scholars, but also to the general reader. The origin of the different races, the dispersion of the human family, ancient civilizations, the manner in which America was populated, the reality of the "lost Atlantis," the disputed points of Biblical chronology, the location of the Garden of Eden, the extent of the deluge, the harmonizing of sacred and profane history, are a few of the many subjects discussed. Though the author's chief point is to prove the existence of man previous to the Adam of Genesis, he does not assume a position hostile to the Bible. The illustrations were made especially for the work; also containing a chart of the progressive dispersion of mankind, from a supposed primitive centre, by Prof. A. Winchell.

LITERATURE.

Woodcuts by A. Closs. First half, royal 8vo. stitched, pp. 1 to 272. Tübingen, 1880. 63.

This work will be welcomed by the scholar as well as the general reader. It purports to give a representation of all the important sides of Roman life in their historical development in popular language and without the attempt of instituting learned researches. The work will take and maintain a place of its own. Its predecessors, the works of Mommsen and Marquardt, are of a strictly scientific character. The works of Friedländer and Forbiger are limited to certain epochs. Guhl and Koner's work is mainly pictorial; whilst Goell's book contains only detached essays. We shall again refer

This interesting little volume throws much light on one of the darkest and most difficult points in the policy of the Emperor Sigismund, and will be gladly welcomed by all those who are interested in the great religious feud raging in the fifteenth century. Cust (R).-Les Religions et les Langues de l'Inde. Par Robert Cust. Bibliotheque Orientale Elzeverienne. 12mo. paper, pp. 200. Paris, 1880. 2s. 6d.

This little French volume contains a translation of the Essays on the Religions and Languages of India, by Mr. Cust, the Honorary Secretary to the Royal Asiatic Society. They will be published next month in Trübner's Oriental Series in their original language, together with the other Linguistic and Oriental Essays of the same author. They are the result of the experience of a long residence in India, and are terse and compressed into an hour's reading, and differ therefore, materially, from the learned and meritorious works of French and German authors on the same subjects, who have never visited India. Their object is to popularize subjects of great interest and importance, but shunned by the general reader.

It cannot be otherwise than that a work by the Nestor of European linguistics should be the result of the profoundest erudition, and should be brimful with the most accurate information respecting the languages, the physical and moral characteristics, the homes, history, and politics of the races in question. The work, when completed, will be a perfect treasury, and it is to be lamented that it was not perfect so as to be of service to the Commission sitting at Berlin. The second volume will treat of the Slaves, Bulgarians, Turks, Finns (inclusive of the Magyars), Gipsies, Armenians, Circassians, Jews, and other Semites. The political views of the author do not in the above work come out as prominently as they did in its predecessor, entitled "The Races of European Turkey." The author states that most of the facts of the present time have confirmed these views, and that the greater number of the reviewers had approved them. We are glad to hear it, but beg to be permitted to doubt whether such approval is shared in the best-informed circles of Austria, France, and England.

Lefmann (Dr. S.)-Geschichte des Alten Indiens. Heft I. 8vo. pp. 128. With Illustrations and Map. Berlin, 1880. 6s,

The publisher Mr. G. Grote, of Berlin, and Prof. Oncken of Marburg, conceived the idea of publishing a "General History written by different Authors." Of this work, which will be completed in about 100 parts, the above forms the 15th. Prof. Lefmann, well known by his edition of the Lalita Vistara and the "Life of A. Schleicher," has undertaken the task of writing the ancient history of India. The first part of it shows that its author knows how to deal with this difficult task. It treats of the History from the Old Vedic primitive time to the Origin of Buddhism, and gives for the first time a thoroughly reliable history of the progress of the culture of Ancient India.

In Schilderungen von Theod. Simons. Reich illustrirt von Prof. Alexander Wagner. To be completed in about 30 parts folio, with 350 Illustrations. Price of each 2s. (Four Parts are now ready.)

This work is a worthy successor of the numerous works on the scenery, life, and manners of the various nations, for which Germany during the last few years has become so justly celebrated; and this no small praise if we name Ebers' wonderful work on Ancient Erypt, Falke's work on Ancient Greece, etc. The drawings of this work were made on the spot by Professor Wagner, and are beautifully reproduced on wood by Theo. Knesing of Munich. The text is by Theo. Simons, who repeatedly visited Spain with his friend the artist. It is calculated that the work will contain about 350 illustrations; the typographical execution, the printing of the woodcuts, and the paper, are alike unexceptional.

Teza (E.)-Intorno agli Studi del Thavenet sulla Lingua Álgonchina. 4to. pp. 22. Pisa, 1880. 4s.

This important paper is extracted from the eighteenth volume of the Annals of the Tuscan Universities. It treats of the labours in the department of the Algonquin language by the Abbé Thavenet, a French Sulpician monk, who had been preaching and teaching among the Algonquins for many years, and died at Rome in 1845. The MSS. of his studies on the language of the Algonquins are preserved in the library of Vittoria Emmanuele at Rome.

Uttara-Rama-Charita. (Le Dénouement de l'Histoire de Rama.) Drame de Bhavabhouti traduit du Sanscrit avec une introduction sur la vie et les œuvres de ce poète par J. Nève. 8vo. pp. viii. and 372. Bruxelles, 1880. 7s. 6d. Although the celebrated drama of Bhavabhouti has been twice translated into English, first by the late H. H. Wilson, and last, in 1874, by Mr. C. H. Tawney at Calcutta, yet the labour of Mr. Neve will be welcomed by readers at home and abroad for the very full and varied introduction, entering minutely into the examination of the works of the Hindu dramatists, and also for containing a critical analysis of the entire piece. An appendix gives evidence of the scholarship and painstaking care of the author, the only Belgian who, at least as far as we are aware, has devoted himself successfully to the study of the Sanskrit language, as well as Sanskrit literature and philosophy.
