THE BOOK OF ENOCH.

Translated from the Ethiopic, with Introduction and Notes.

By REV. GEORGE H. SCHODDE, Ph.D.

In making the new Translation, Dr. Schodde has had aids which surpassed those at Bishop Lawrence's disposal New MSS. of the original have been brought from Ethiopia, a reliable text has been issued, and a host of scholars in England, Holland, France, and especially Germany, have employed a vast amount of theological learning and historical research to unravel the mysteries of this literary enigma. In preparing the Introduction and Notes, which occupy fully three-fifths of the whole work, the translator has made a thorough study and conscientious use of these aids. He has critically analysed the work into its component parts, determined the age, purpose, and language of each, and by thas giving the true historical background, has sought to make the contents more easily understood. In the translation proper the object aimed at was to be as literal as possible.

Translated from the Italian

By CHRISTIAN E. DET MOLD.

"In these handsome volumes Mr. Detmold offers a translation of the principal writings of Machiavelli in the departments history, politics, and diplomacy. Few translators do their work well, but Mr. Detmold evidently undertook the task because expected to find pleasure in it, and the result is that he has produced a rendering which is clear, fluent, and eminently eadable.' Altogether, the volumes are most attractive, and ought to do much, both in England and America, to pro

ote the study of one of the most illustrious of Italian writers."- The St. James's Gazette.

"The letters are all well worth reading, giving the honest and independent thought of a strong and cultivated mind pa a variety of important topics in politics, history and literature. Slavery and later on Secession naturally occupy much space and the discussion of these subjects together with other important questions of the time by a foreigner, although one who become a naturalized American citizen, gives them a peculiar interest; for Lieber's opinions generally carry with them an of impartiality such as belongs to a spectator rather than to an actual combatant.". The Saturday Review.

"Lieber follows American history for almost half a century of its most interesting period."-Hartford Courant. "His correspondents included some of the most eminent men of his time, and whatever subject he discussed-politic public affairs, social topics, literature, history-he brought to it a mind singularly luminous and well informed, and a very candil temper. One finds, therefore, in his letters a variety and range which are quite unusual, and a wealth of thought and suggestial which makes them very profitable and fruitful reading."-Boston Journal.

"Fully to appreciate the works of such a character as Dr. Lieber, one should know the man himself, the motives and aim that inspired him, and the conditions and circumstances under which he wrote. This knowledge is copiously revealed in the published Life and Letters. The volume has been skillfully edited by Mr. Perry. He has judiciously arranged materials in his hands so that Dr. Lieber tells his own story in his own words. It is one of the most interesting and instracti biographies that have issued from the press in many years-alike rich in charming glimpses of men and things, and in food for thought."-Harper's New Monthly Magazine.

"He has not only given us a careful and skilful translation, but his annotations are very serviceable in assisting us to adequate appreciation of the satirist."-Saturday Review.

Mr. Lewis has done his work in a scholarly fashion. His translation is as good a version as prose in one language cal be of poetry in another. His notes show great special and general reading, and are what notes ought to be, short, sharp, decisive, containing just as much as is necessary for the illustration of the author, and no more. The book will be welcom both to scholars and to those whose only access to Latin authors is through the English tongue."-Daily News.
