PREFACE. THE great support and countenance which met the first proposal of a London Medical Directory, is a sufficient indication that such a work is considered a desideratum by the profession. No attempt has hitherto been made to combine the lists of the Colleges of Physicians and Surgeons, and the Apothecaries' Company. Any person seeking information on the subject must have examined the three lists separately to obtain it. In the catalogue of the Fellows, Licentiates, and Extra Licentiates of the College of Physicians, the names are given in the order in which they were admitted or elected, but no dates are given respecting the period of their admission and election. The Editors have examined many of the periodical lists of the College of Surgeons, and it would appear that the plan upon which they have been framed has been varied from time to time. The names inserted in some of the lists are not to be found in others and more recent ones, though the parties are still in existence and in practice.
