Copies without the Castell lose half their value. Of the whole 8 volumes there are (it is said only 12) copies on large paper. The ruled copies are very convenient for the better distinguishing of the different Walton's important Prolegomena printed separately, Lpz. 1777. 8°. (1 d. 16 gr.) texts. Some differences of these copies are to be observed. 1. As the work, 1652-57, was printed under Cromwell's protectorate, Walton, in the preface to the 1st vol. C 2 b, line 26, has extolled his support. Upon Charles II.'s ascending the throne, this leaf was suppressed. In the copies of the first sort, which are very scarce, and are called republican copies, the passage runs thus: Primo autem commemorandi, quorum favore chartam a vectigalibus immunem habuimus, quod quinque abhinc annis, a con cilio secretiori primo concessum, postea a Serenissimo D. Protectore ejusque concilio, operis promovendi causa, benigne confirmatum et continuatum erat, quibus subjungendi etc. In the later copies (loyal copies) it is thus read instead: Inter hos effusiore bonitate labores nostros prosecuti sunt (præter eos, quorum favore chartam a vectigalibus immunem habuimus) etc. 2. At the same time Walton added a dedication to Charles II. in 2 leaves, which however exists in very few copies (according to Dibdin, Decam. Maracci, and furnished with 25 cancels, a leaf of errata, and a Latin title and preface. These copies are the most common. Par. 1525. New Test. Par. 1523. 2 vols. The parliament issued on the 28th of August, 1525. a prohibition against this translation, so that he was obliged to get the rest printed at Antwerp. At first in 1672 and following years in 32 vols. in 8°. but the edition of 1682 is preferred to this and other octavo editions on account of its correctness. Still however the edition (though less fine) revised and enlarged by Rondet, Nimes, 1781. 8°. 25 vols. is of value. The editions in 12°. at Brussels, 1705 to 1730. are well printed, and liked on account of their size: they are bound in 40, 45 or 54 vols. |
