D NEWS OF THE MONTH GIFTS URING the month of March, 1924, the Library received as gifts, 3,737 volumes, 7,379 pamphlets, 16 maps, and 67 prints. Some of the more important and interesting of these gifts were the following: From the Estate of Anne D. Thomson came 1,050 volumes, among which were four Aldines, Racinet's "Costume Historique," books in fine bindings, and sets of French authors; 23 prints, including war subjects by Abel Faivre, drypoints by Paul Helleu, a color print by Fritz Thaulow, engravings by Bartolozzi, etc.; also 35 autographs. Mr. W. Edward Seybel gave the Library 37 bound volumes and 661 single numbers of "Godey's Lady's Book" and "Godey's Magazine," 18521897. From Mr. J. Pierpont Morgan came Part IV of "Babylonian Records in the Library of J. Pierpont Morgan, edited by Albert T. Clay," New Haven, 1923; and volume 12, text and plates (no. 18 of 500 sets printed) of "The North American Indian... written, illustrated and published by Edward S. Curtis," Plimpton Press, 1922. From Mrs. George W. Smith came a collection of 76 volumes, 27 pamphlets, 46 periodicals, 6 maps, etc., also a letter of Margaret Beekman Livingston to her son, dated July 6, 1776, and a letter of Robert R. Livingston, Jr., to his sister, dated March 26, 1775. From M. Georges-Marie Haardt, Paris, came a copy of "Le Raid Citroën; la première traversée du Sahara en automobile; de Touggourt à Tombouctou par l'Atlantide; Introduction de M. André Citroën, par Georges-Marie Haardt & Louis Audouin-Dubreuil," Paris, 1924. Mr. Alfred Bernet gave a collection of books and portfolios containing designs of old and modern laces and embroideries, comprising 8 volumes, 23 portfolios, and 53 photographs. From Mrs. Mina Mason Van Sinderen, Tuxedo Park, N. Y., came 43 volumes and 3 pamphlets relating to the Swedenborgian faith, from the library of the late Dr. William Mason. From the "New York Telegram and Evening Mail" came 65 bound volumes of "The Globe" and the "New York Commercial Advertiser." From the "Theatre Magazine" came 164 bound volumes, being Metropolitan Opera House Programmes, 1911-1921; "Country Life in America," 1905-08; "Dress," 190608; "Colliers," 1907-08. From the Council of the Museum Matice Ceská, Praha, Czechoslovakia, came a collection of Czechoslovak and German books and pamphlets. From the University of Edinburgh came five volumes of "The Gifford Lectures.' The following gifts of prints were received: From Mr. George W. Davison, an etching by Muirhead Bone ("Portrait of a man"); from Prof. Emil Orlik, his etched portrait of Joseph Pennell, 1924; from the Duke of Richmond and Gordon, Goodwood, Chichester, England, an impression of a mezzotint by George Raphael Ward of the portrait of Caroline Gordon, Duchess of Richmond, painted by Sir Thomas Lawrence. D ADDITIONS AND USE OF THE LIBRARY IN MARCH, 1924 URING the month of March, 1924, there were received at the Library 19,712 volumes and 8,985 pamphlets. (These include both Reference and Circulation Departments.) The total number of readers recorded was 131,846. They consulted 286,786 volumes. Visitors to the building numbered 329,035.
