Leaf 1a. line 1. is, COMINCIA LA COMEDIA DI. It ends on the recto of the last leaf with the colophon, Nel mille quatro cento etc. The appellation DIVIÑA commedia is first to be met with since 1555. There are 3 periods for the text of Dante: 1. from the Ist edition of 1472 to the 1st edition of the academy della Crusca, different texts from different MSS.: 2. from 1595 to 1791, the text of the Crusca: 3. since 1791, in part differing from the Crusca (both the editions of Lombardi, the Bodonian, that of Costanzi 1801, and at Milan 1804), and in part following it.

At first, 12 leaves of preliminary matter. Leaf 13a begins the text, surrounded by the commentary. At the end is the colophon : Fine del comento di Christophoro Landino etc. There are copies on very large paper.

This book is very remarkable, as one of the first 4 furnished with copper-plates (Monte santo di Dio. Fir. 1477. Ptolemæus, Lat. Roma, 1478. Berlinghieri geographia. Fir., about 1480). The designs of these plates (belonging to the Inferno), according to the common opinion, are by Sandro Botticelli, and the engraving by Baccio Baldini.

The copies have sometimes more, sometimes fewer plates, because the last were' prepared after the completion of the printing. The copy on vellum in the Magliabechian library at Florence is without plates. A copy with I plate is in the library of the king of England. With 2
