d. Schätzen d. Centralbibl. zu München. Münch., Scherer, 1803 -7. 8°. 7 vols. each of 6 pieces (14 d.).

ARETINO l'unico, see Bn. Ac

COLTI.

941 ARETINO, Pt. Ven., figliuoli d'Aldo, 1551. 4°. 3 parts in I vol.

Scarce and sought after. The single editions of these 3 pieces are of little worth.

Debure's account, that in l'humanità di Cristo (11. IV. Ven., Marcolini, 1539. 8°.) the conception of Mary is compared with the fable of Jupiter and Leda, is incorrect. The following passage probably gave occasion to the mistake, in which the subject treated of is the journey of Joseph and Mary to Jerusalem occasioned by the numbering of the people; Andando la donna e l'uomo ch' io dico alla imperiale ubbidienza, somigliavano nella lor pace, una colomba e un CIGNO che senza curarsi della esca tutti sicuri si diportano sù per il LIDO.

Vinegia, Fr. Marcolini, 1535. 4°. 70 unnumbered leaves with the signatures A-I.

This history of the Passion in poetic prose was unknown to Fontanini, Zeno and Mazzurchelli. The canzoni mentioned in the title are sometimes wanting.—The first edition, Ven. Nicol. da Sabio, 1534. 4°.

943 lagrime de Angelica dal M. P. A. without place. 1538. 8°.

The first edition, scarce. Also Ven., Marcolini, 1545. 8°.

Ven., Zoppino, 1537. 8°.

Also without place or date, 8°. as scarce as the above.

[blocks in formation]

The author seeks to make Roland, Rinaldo, Astolfo and the rest of the Paladines ridiculous in this very scarce poem. It contains only 46 ottave of the first canto, and 6 of the second.

948 Astolfeida, opera dilettevole da leggere, che contiene la vita e fatti di tutti li paladini di Francia without place or date, 8°. 20 leaves.

A still rarer poem of the same sort. It contains 3 cantos in ottava rima and is unfinished. At the end, Fine del terzo canto, presto sara fuore el resto.

sonetti lussuriosi, with designs and I unnumbered leaf with the by Giulio Romano.

Concerning this obscene work, see Suite de la clef du cabinet des princes 1759, Fevr. p. 117-124. Debure n. 3958. Freytags Nachrr. 244. Murr Journal XIV, 3 ss. Flögel's Gesch. d. Burlesk. 90. The Dresden library had up to the year 1781 probably the only copy still extant.

One of the scarcest of Aretino's writings. -L'ipocrito. Ven., Bindoni, 1540. 4°. the first edition. Talanta. Ven., Marcol., 1542. 12. the first edition. All these plays have been often printed. Under Tansillo's name appeared, il Cavallerizo, com. Vicenza, 1601. 12°. il Sofista, com. Vic., 1601. 12°. il finto, com. Vic., 1601. 12°. All 3 together, Vic. 1610. 12°. These are nothing else but the maresc., filos. and ippocr. of Aretino published by Jac. Doroneti with some alterations under the name of Tansillo.-Under Ces. Caporali's name appeared, lo sciocco, Ven. 1604. 12°. and ib. 1628. 12°. and la Ninnetta, Ven. 1604. 12°. The Cortig. and Talanta of Aretino have been published in a mutilated state by Fr. Buonafede.

colophon.

Very scarce original edition of the first part of the Ragionamenti, printed in Italic characters.

962

Impressa in Torino (rather Ven.), P. M. L. 1536. 8°. 148 unnumbered leaves.

Equally scarce original edition of the second part of the Ragion. also printed in Italic characters. Some copies have a new title with the date, Ven. 1540.

963

Novara, 1538. 80. 78 unnumbered leaves in Italic characters.

The original edition of the third part of the Ragion. Another edition with the same date seems to be more recent. It has 126 pages, and in the colophon impresso instead of stampata. A third edition, without place, 1539. small 8°. 55 leaves in Italic characters is not so scarce. There are copies of it on blue paper.

Ven., Bm. detto l'Imperador, 1545. 8°. 127 leaves.

This volume may be added to the three preceding, and the whole will then form a costly collection, which in France has only been met with at M'Carthy's sale, (133 fr. 5 c.)—This dialogue appeared at first, Ven. Gi. de Farri, 1543. 8°. and is also to be found in the third volume of the Ragion. of 1589 and has been reprinted (though interpolated) under the title, Le carte parlanti dialogo di Partenio Etiro, Ven. 1651. 8°. but it is wanting in the edition of the Ragion. of 1660.

Napoli, 1534. 8°.

32 unnumbered leaves with the signatures, A-D.

This very scarce piece contains the third dialogue of the first part of the Ragion. and not the whole first part, as some state. Reprinted, Ven. 1535.8°. 32 leaves with a title printed in red. The edition Nap. 1535. 8°. in Debure is probably only one of the above-mentioned.

Parisiis without date, 8°. 144 unnumbered leaves with the signatures, A-S.

This still altogether unknown edition contains 4 Giornate. The first is the third in the first part of the Ragion. and the 2-4 are the three of the second part of the Rag. According to the type of the title the book would seem to have been printed at Rome. 967

Stampata nella nobil città di Bengodi, 1584.-Therein with only a half title and the signatures running on, Commento di Ser Agresto da Ficaruolo, sopra la prima ficata del padre Siceo. Con la diceria de' nasi.-3 parts in I vol. small 8°.

Of this reprint I know four different editions with the same date.

1) Part I. 198 pages. Part II. 339 pages. Commento (in the title of which stands Ser Agretso by an error of the press) 118 pages. It has, not including the column-titles and catchwords, 29 lines in a page, and appears to me to be the oldest and genuine edition. In Italic characters.

2) Part I. 228 pages. Part II. 401 pages. Commento (it has correctly Agresto) 142 pages. It has, with the above-mentioned exceptions, 28 lines in a page. It appears more recent than the preceding. In larger Italic characters.

3) Part I. p. 1-194. Part II. p. 195522. see Clément bibl. cur. II. 44.

4) the same as No. I. but under the colophon of the second part there is in addition, MeDICata re Labor. see Denis Garell.

Bibl. 333. This gives the year (of printing?) 1651. But in the year 1651 the carte parlanti really appeared at Venice.

[merged small][ocr errors][merged small][merged small]

A fine edition, sought after, but incorrect. The explanations are of no value. Ragion. P. I. p. 1-174. P. II. p. 175-418. Rag. del Zoppino, p. 419-451. Comm. di S. Agresto, p. 452-541. Next ought to follow with separate pagination, La puttana errante overo dialogo di Madalena e Giulia (38 pages). Those copies, in which the puttana is either wanting or is only to be found in a spurious reprint of 54 pages in larger characters, lose a great part of their value. As to the rest, all that is contained

in the third part of the Rag. of 1589 is wanting in this edition. There are two separate impressions under this date. In the one the z is of a somewhat larger and unusual, in the other of the usual size. That with the large z appears to be the older impression.

Both editions are equally perfect, and the distinction made between them is unfounded. The Pornodidasc. is also in the edition of Meursii elegantt., without place or date, small 8°. of 430 pages. A French translation Dialogue de l'Aretin, without place or date, 12°.

Very scarce. Merc. de St. Léger suppl. à Pr. Marchand, Ed. II. p. 81. takes the date not for that of the printer, but for that of the writer, which is improbable.
