1110 ARISTOTELIS opera, Theophrasti de historia plantar. 11. X. et de caussis plantar. ll. VI. Ven., Aldus, 1495-98. fol. 5 voll.

The first Greek edition, fine, yet less rare than other Aldines of this period.

The arrangement of the work, as Aldus himself specifies it in the preface to the 3rd and 4th vol. is, Vol. I. Organon, Nov. 1495. 234 unnumbered leaves. Vol. II. Aristotelis vita ex Laertio, Febr. 1497. 32 unnumbered and 268 numbered leaves. Vol. III. Arist. de hist. anim. ll. IX. Jan. 1497. 457 numbered leaves, then I blank and 8 printed leaves (fragments of the 10th book of the hist. anim.), which Aldus obtained too late, as they properly belong after the 145th leaf, and are sometimes given at the commencement of the volume, and sometimes are altogether wanting. Between leaf 400-1 there ought to be unnumbered leaf, only printed on one side. Vol. IV. Jun. 1497. contains 1 leaf of title; Theophrasti hist. plant. 226 leaves. Arist. problem. 116 leaves. Alex. Aphrod. probl. 42 leaves. Arist. Mechan. 12 leaves. Ej. metaph. et Theophr. metaph. 121 leaves. At the end, 1 leaf with the colophon. Vol. V. Arist. Ethica, etc. Jun. 1498. 316 numbered and 1 unnumbered leaf at the end. Between leaf 209-10 there ought to be 13 unnumbered leaves, Arist. œcon., of which the first is blank.

According to Aldus's intention, vol. 1 and 2 are properly bound together in one volume, so that the work is published as 4 vols. Many copies are in 6 vols., the 4th vol. (commencing from Arist. problem.) being in 2 vols. A copy on vellum in the Royal library at Paris; another in the library of Corpus Christi college, Oxford. The volume wanting in the latter is in the Bodleian. Only vol. 3 and 4, M'Carthy, 626 fr. Also copies with red lines. Ars poet. and De arte rhet. are wanting in this edition.
