ESTA obra, como lo manifiesta su título, es una aplicacion á las lenguas Española é Inglesa, del método con que la Naturaleza enseñía las lenguas á los hombres. Este admirable método fue descubierto por Mr. N. G. DUFiEF, vecino de Filadelfia, y aplicado por él mismo á la lengua Francesa. La primera edicion de su obra pareció a fines del año de 1804, y tuvo un suceso bien singular ; siendo desde luego generalmente admirada y aplaudida, no obstante la novedad de las

que enseña, y su completo contraste ú oposicion con las que por tantos años habian estado en posesion de dirigir los entendimientos en el estudio de las lenguas, y á pesar de la combinacion general de los profesores y maestros, que (a excepcion de muy pocos) se opusieron acérrimamente a su introduccion en las escuelas*.

* La mayor parte de los que, se opusiéroa a nacvo método, no lo hicieron porque dudasen de la solidez de su doctriira ; sino porque temiéron que el rá. pido adelantamiento de los discípulos diera un golpe mort al á su existencia en clase de profesores, dexando vacia3osxis escuelas ; por la facilidad que proporciona al estudiante de aprender por sí mismo una lengua, dentro de muy corto tiempo, sin necesitar del maestro, sino para algunas lecciones de pronunciacion : (no habiendo aun publicado Mr. N. G. Dufief su Diccionario Universal de pronunciacion, por cuyo medio qualquier Americano ó Ingles puede apren. der por sí mismo la verdadera pronunciacion de todas las palabras Frarcesas, y vice versâ qualquier Frances la de las Inglesas). La experiencia demostró prontamente que estos temores eran infundados, pues se verificó toc 'a contrario: esto es, creció el número de personas deseosas de aprender el Fras. zS, y los maestros que habian adoptado el método de la Naturaleza, se conside. ráron acreedores á aumentar sus honorarios, lo que la gratitud y generosidad
